Does porn affect dopamine?
Grade BHuman observational or animal evidence· Mixed evidence — at least one study contradicts
What the research says
Our evidence catalogue links 5 studies to porn: 2 observational studies, 2 reviews and 1 PET imaging study.
The strongest supporting study is Wang 2022, an observational study of 52 people published in Front Hum Neurosci. It measured ERP late positive potential novelty effect to novel vs familiar sexual images, high (n=27) vs low (n=25) tendency toward problematic pornography use; dopamine not measured.
In the authors' words: “While both groups demonstrated a sustained novelty effect in the late positive potential (LPP) within the 500-800 ms time windows, the novelty effect was greater in the high tendencies toward PIPU group than in the low tendencies toward PIPU group.”
A study like this shows an association in people. It cannot show that porn causes the difference.
Not every study agrees. Stormezand 2021, a PET brain-imaging study of 25 people, points the other way: “No group differences between striatal BPND's of [11C]-raclopride in subjects with (n = 15) and without (n = 10) CPU were detected.”
Evidence grade: B, human observational or animal evidence, with at least one study that contradicts it.
How the app explains it
Novel sexual stimuli are a strong natural reward, and people who describe their use as compulsive report a blunted response to everyday cues. The only receptor-imaging study on this (Stormezand 2021, [11C]raclopride PET, 15 users vs 10 controls) found no difference in striatal D2/3 availability and no link to severity — so there is no evidence yet of the receptor downregulation seen in drug addiction. This score is an editorial estimate drawn from the behavioural-addiction literature, not a measured receptor change.
Pathway: novelty-driven VTA→NAc reward; D2/3 change NOT shown on PET (Stormezand 2021)
This is the mechanism card shown on this habit in the app. It is editorial copy written from the studies below; where it and a study disagree, the study wins.
What this means, and what it doesn't
What it means
- There is published research on how porn relates to the brain's reward system, and every study it rests on is listed below with a link.
- The evidence is real but indirect: observational studies in people, brain imaging without a measured effect size, or work in animals.
- If porn is costing you sleep, focus or time, cutting back and tracking it is a reasonable experiment. How you feel over a few weeks is the result that matters.
What it doesn't
- It does not show that a "dopamine detox" resets anything. None of the studies listed here tested a detox programme.
- It is not a measurement of your brain. The app's score for porn is an editorial estimate: studies support the mechanism, they do not validate the number.
- It is not a diagnosis or medical advice. If porn feels out of control, a doctor or counsellor can help.

Electrophysiological Evidence of Enhanced Processing of Novel Pornographic Images in Individuals With Tendencies Toward Problematic Internet Pornography Use
Wang 2022, Front Hum Neurosci · doi:10.3389/fnhum.2022.897536
Measured: ERP late positive potential novelty effect to novel vs familiar sexual images, high (n=27) vs low (n=25) tendency toward problematic pornography use; dopamine not measured
“While both groups demonstrated a sustained novelty effect in the late positive potential (LPP) within the 500-800 ms time windows, the novelty effect was greater in the high tendencies toward PIPU group than in the low tendencies toward PIPU group.”
Supporting·Review
Neuroscience of Internet Pornography Addiction: A Review and Update
Love 2015, Behav Sci (Basel) · doi:10.3390/bs5030388
Measured: Narrative review of neuroscience of Internet pornography addiction against the addiction model
“The review leads to the conclusion that Internet pornography addiction fits into the addiction framework and shares similar basic mechanisms with substance addiction.”
Supporting·Human observational · n = 21
The impact of internet pornography addiction on brain function: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study
Shu 2025, Front Hum Neurosci · doi:10.3389/fnhum.2025.1477914
Measured: fNIRS prefrontal/parietal functional connectivity and Stroop performance during 10 min pornography viewing; 5 addicted vs 16 control students; dopamine not measured
“After viewing the pornography, the high-frequency group demonstrated longer reaction times and significantly reduced accuracy while completing the Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT) compared to the low-frequency group and also their own performance before and after viewing the pornography.”

Striatal Neural Processing of Sexual Cues in Problematic Pornography Use: A Systematic Review
Lichte 2025, Curr Addict Rep · doi:10.1007/s40429-025-00702-2
Measured: Preregistered systematic review of striatal (ventral/dorsal) processing of sexual cues in problematic pornography use
“Some studies find higher ventral and dorsal striatal activity in participants with PPU compared to non-problematic users when processing proximal and distal sexual cues, whereas other studies report no striatal activity differences.”
Points the other way·Human PET imaging · n = 25
No evidence for decreased D2/3 receptor availability and frontal hypoperfusion in subjects with compulsive pornography use
Stormezand 2021, Psychiatry Res Neuroimaging · doi:10.1016/j.pscychresns.2021.111284
Measured: [11C]raclopride PET striatal D2/3 receptor availability (BPND) and frontal R1/ASL perfusion, men with compulsive pornography use (n=15) vs without (n=10)
“No group differences between striatal BPND's of [11C]-raclopride in subjects with (n = 15) and without (n = 10) CPU were detected.”

- How strong is the evidence on porn and dopamine?
- Grade B: human observational or animal evidence. At least one study points the other way. Grades are computed from each study's design, whether it measured an effect, and any contradicting findings.
