How Long Does It Take to Reset Your Dopamine After Quitting Porn, Social Media or Gaming?
The honest answer: no study we know of has measured it. What the research on porn, social media and gaming does show, why every 'reset in X days' number lacks a source, and what to track instead.
It is one of the most searched questions about dopamine: how many days after quitting porn, social media or gaming until your brain is "back to normal"? Forums and videos give confident numbers.
We went through every study in our evidence catalogue to find where those numbers come from. We could not find one. No study we list measured dopamine in people after they quit porn, social media or gaming, at any time point. So the honest answer is: nobody knows, and any specific number of days is a guess.
That is not the end of the story, though. The research that does exist changes what you should expect, and what you should track.
What a real answer would need
To say "dopamine recovers in N days", a study would have to measure dopamine signalling in people (in practice, PET brain imaging), have them stop the habit, and measure again at several points afterwards. For alcohol and drugs, studies at least compare current users with controls. For porn, social media and gaming, our catalogue has no study of this kind at all.
Porn: the premise itself is shaky
The "reset" idea assumes porn has lowered something that needs to recover, usually dopamine receptors. One study tested exactly that. Using PET imaging, it found "no group differences" in striatal D2/3 receptor availability between men with compulsive pornography use and men without (Stormezand 2021).
Other studies find differences, but in brain responses rather than in dopamine:
- People with stronger tendencies towards problematic porn use showed a greater brain response to novel sexual images in EEG recordings (Wang 2022).
- A systematic review of brain imaging found the picture mixed: "some studies find higher ventral and dorsal striatal activity" in problematic users, "whereas other studies report no striatal activity differences" (Lichte 2025).
- An earlier review argued that internet pornography addiction "fits into the addiction framework" (Love 2015). That is an interpretation of other studies, not a new measurement.
So there is evidence that problematic use goes with different brain responses, and direct evidence against the receptor story. There is no evidence on how long anything takes to change after quitting. Full details on Pornography and dopamine (grade B, mixed).
Social media: one correlation, no follow-up
The best human study links a higher share of social-app use to lower dopamine synthesis capacity in the putamen, in 22 people measured once (Westbrook 2021). It is a snapshot. It does not show that social media caused the difference, and nobody went back to measure those people after they cut down.

Gaming: dopamine during play, nothing after
Gaming has some of the oldest direct evidence:
- During a goal-directed video game, PET imaging showed changes "consistent with increased release and binding of dopamine" in the striatum (Koepp 1998). That is release during the game itself; it says nothing about lasting change.
- Frequent adolescent players had higher grey matter volume in the left striatum than infrequent players (Kuhn 2011).
- After 10 days of play, game scenes triggered brain activation that the authors compared with cue reactions in substance dependence (Han 2011).
- A 2025 review concludes that gaming disorder "shares similar neurobiological alterations" with other addictions (Zheng 2025).
None of these studies followed people after they stopped playing. See Video games and dopamine.
The closest thing to a recovery study
The only study in our catalogue that looked at abstinence at all is about alcohol, in monkeys. After long-term alcohol drinking, male macaques "regardless of abstinence status, had reduced dopamine release in putamen" (Salinas 2021). In other words, in that study, a period without alcohol did not erase the difference.
That should not be stretched to porn or phones: it is a drug, in another species. But it is a useful warning against neat timelines. For stimulant drugs, a meta-analysis of 31 imaging studies found lower D2/D3 receptor availability in users than in controls (Ashok 2017), but as a comparison between groups it cannot say how long that lasts after stopping. See Alcohol and dopamine and Cocaine and dopamine.
What to track instead of a reset date
Without a dopamine timeline, the useful question changes from "when will my brain be fixed?" to "is quitting working for me?" That you can answer yourself:
- Keep a record of clean days. A streak shows your actual pattern: when you slip, what triggers it, whether the gaps are getting longer.
- Track a few things you can feel. Sleep, focus, mood, and how strong the urges are. Note them weekly, not hourly.
- Give it weeks, not days, and judge it by those notes rather than a countdown.
- Treat app estimates as estimates. In Dopamine Detox, each habit's score and the Simulator's one-week projection use editorial weights and uncalibrated timing assumptions. The studies inform the habit explanations; they do not establish those numerical weights or measure you.
And if quitting is hard in a way that worries you, that is worth taking to a doctor or counsellor. If the habit is heavy daily drinking, do not stop suddenly without medical advice: alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous.

Quick answers
- How long does it take to reset dopamine after quitting porn?
- No study in our catalogue has measured it. The idea that porn lowers dopamine receptors was tested in one PET study, which found no difference in striatal D2/3 receptor availability between men with and without compulsive pornography use.
- How long does it take for dopamine to recover after quitting social media?
- Unknown. The only human dopamine imaging study on phone use is a one-time correlation in 22 people. No study has followed people who stopped using social media and measured dopamine again.
- How long does it take to reset dopamine after quitting gaming?
- Unknown. Studies show dopamine release while playing and differences between frequent and infrequent players, but none measured dopamine in people after they stopped gaming.
- Is there a set number of days for a dopamine reset?
- Not one that comes from research we have found. Any fixed number of days you see quoted has no dopamine measurement behind it in our catalogue. Track what you can observe instead, like sleep, focus and urges, over several weeks.
